This is a chronicle of a discrete man; if you know something about modern Japanese writers you will be struck by how much Keene leaves out about the turmoil of post-war Japan. The last chapter is a short interview with her and was quite insightful as well. Although I considered myself well read, I had never hear of the author or this particular book. So sorry I'm at the end of the trail.
