The language and descriptions give a strong sense of the period, and the characters are fascinating. But these themes are often noted with pithy, truthful commentary (I found myself highlighting several sentences in this book of the series, words that struck me forcefully). Partying-and-having-a-good-time guy might go home with the bar slut, but he's not going to ever develop a real relationship. I bought this for a couple relatives and they loved them. She embodies everything one could hope to be. Their endless squabbling is tedious but nothing more until one of them turns up dead, followed shortly by his petulant, whining sister.
